Bassist extraordinaire Marion Hayden leads a tribute to her fellow band mate and friend, Detroit saxophonist/composer Donald Walden. As jazz critic Mark Stryker recently noted, “Few musicians have embodied the soul of the Detroit jazz scene as powerfully in recent decades as Donald Walden.” The set will feature some very special friends – pianists Barry Harris and Geri Allen and saxophonist Charles McPherson – and members of the Free Radicals (the group Walden founded): Rick Roe (piano), Diego Rivera (sax), Thaddeus Dixon (drums), and Cassius Richmond (alto sax).
“[Nurullah] has a rare vocal gift. Her voice is pristine and she sings the American songbook standards with a touch of the Brazilian composers Jobim, Horta and Brant” (Nuvo.net). You can check out this Detroit gem on her debut release, The Ruby and the Pearl. 2008 Artist in Residence and renowned bassist/composer Christian McBride kicks off the festival with a tribute to Motown legend Marvin Gaye. Though a native Philadelphian and the most revered jazz bassist of his generation, McBride was weaned on the Motown Sound, which continues to influence his music to this day. The performance features McBride’s arrangements and singers Lalah Hathaway (who also appears in her own set on Saturday), Rahsaan Patterson, and José James. Vibe anointed Patterson “...the most gifted tenor in R&B, with a true gift for sophisticated musicianship.” And rising star James, with his blending of urban blues, hip-hop, soul and straight-ahead, is charting a new path in contemporary music – “one that is as fresh as tomorrow, but deeply rooted in the tradition of jazz.” The big band features McBride on bass and includes Wess Anderson and Lynn Gruenewald (alto sax); Ron Blake and Diego Rivera (tenor sax); Tony Lustig (baritone sax); Dennis Wilson, Vincent Chandler and David Thompson (trombone); Walter Harris (bass trombone); Mike Williams, Derrick Gardner, Kris Johnson and Ross Margitza (trumpets); Rob Pipho (vibes); Dan Fahnle (guitar); Alberto Nacif (percussion); Terreon Gully (drums); and backup singers Alicia Renee Smith, Ashton Moore, and Michael Hanna.
